Right out of the gate a number of stumbling blocks threatened to prevent the 80th annual San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo from living up to last year's record-breaking numbers.
First off was the date, which coincided with San Antonio's stock show and rodeo; second was the smaller number of livestock entries; and third was the torrential rainfall that dropped more than 2½ inches on the fairgrounds its opening weekend.
Despite those potential setbacks, San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo Association officials are reporting an increase from last year's record-setting run.
"We really didn't see any repercussions from San Antonio affecting attendance at all from the spectators, fans and competitors," said Tom Thompson, SASSRA marketing director.
"All the rodeo performances were sold out except for two. Even at that we barely missed selling out those two performances, which happened to be the first two nights. You wish you could have had those tickets sold so it would have been completely sold out, but it is what it is."
