Readers share memories of Girl Scouting

This is my 45th year of being a Girl Scout. Brownies used to the first age level for Scouts and I started in the second grade. I remember sitting in a Brownie circle with my troop singing a song as we put our dues in the dues jar.
My favorite part of Girl Scouting has always been camp. When I was a Junior Scout, I helped with the music for week-long day camps at Camp Christie in Charles City.
When I was old enough to be a Counselor In Training, I came to the Girl Scout camp on Clear Lake, Camp Gaywood — now Camp Tanglefoot. We did primitive camping on the undeveloped “New Land” and worked with younger Scouts playing games and teaching Scoutcraft skills.
I feel like I grew up at that camp, going every summer as a camp counselor until I got married. I loved teaching younger Scouts how to swim, canoe, and sail on Clear Lake.
I belonged to the University of Northern Iowa Campus Girl Scouts while I was working on my B.A. degree. My roommate, Sally Gilliland, and I lead a Cedar Falls troop of Cadette scouts during our sophomore year. We took them to Camp Christie for a weekend of hiking and exploring.
