I know that Cruise is getting a big promo push for “Rock of Ages,” based on the hoary Broadway show about nameless long-hair bands of the 80s. Fine, that’s ok. But just the idea of seeing tiny Tom romancing Beyonce and then pitying himself for his career falling apart is too much to bear. Clint Eastwood told me a while ago that it didn’t matter whether Beyonce’s “Mr. Norman Maine” was black or white–which was interesting. Race doesn’t matter. But believe me, Tom and Beyonce are going to look like Boris and Natasha. Eastwood has been an amazing filmmaker– “Unforgiven” is a classic, and “Mystic River” and “Million Dollar Baby” were excellent. “Gran Torino” was superb, an all time high. But “J Edgar” proved to be tone deaf. “Hereafter” made very little sense. Eastwood may be getting elbowed by Warner Bros. He should stick to his guns, and really, no Tom Cruise as a rock star who walks into the ocean because his AutoTune doesn’t hit the charts anymore. Oy vey.
