Men's basketball: Time of their lives
21.05.12
Roger Franklin scanned the stands every few minutes during
timeouts and when he was on the bench — stealing glances behind him, across the
court and behind the baskets.
Franklin was focused on North Texas’ home finale against
Louisiana-Lafayette, but in the back of his mind he couldn’t help thinking
about the man who was looking down on him from somewhere in the crowd of nearly
7,000 fans in the green seats at the Super Pit.
Franklin and his father, Roger Franklin Sr., endured so much
just to enjoy an event that others take for granted — a father watching his son
play basketball.
Roger Franklin Sr. has gone through surgery and radiation
treatments to treat the brain cancer that has plagued him for the last eight years.
Roger Franklin Jr. transferred from Oklahoma State to UNT last spring and
adapted to a new school and a new set of teammates largely to be closer to home
and his father in Duncanville.
“I was looking for him the whole game. Then I saw him
standing up,” the younger Franklin said after the game, his arm wrapped around
his father’s shoulders as players, fans and coaches wandered by on the Super
Pit floor.
