Super Special Silver Shoes, Or My Complicated Relationship With Heels

All of my shoe memories before the age of 12 involve sneakers. While I don’t remember actually wearing them, I still have a pair of tiny pink Reeboks I sported when I was 3. I remember having a rotation of black, navy, and red Converse high tops when I was 8. And I remember being 11, and getting a personalized pair of NIKEiDs right when they came out. But my first fancy shoe memory went down right before my 13th birthday.
I was to be Bat Mitzvahed at the gawky age of 13, and if I had to suffer through it with braces and a training bra, I was going to need some really amazing shoes. Months before I had found a dress for the service (though a lot of girls wore suits, I was — and still am — not in favor of ladysuits), I found the Super Special Silver Shoes.
