Women increasingly single, man increasingly sad

The topic of the night was the noted increase in the number of modern women choosing to live alone. The speakers were Eric Klinenberg, sociologist and author of " Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone ," a study of our increasing cultural attraction to remaining single, and Kate Bolick, who penned the Atlantic’s wildly popular article " All the Single Ladies ."
Each spoke about the fact that Americans, women in particular, are increasingly eschewing traditional married life in favor of living independently. Almost half of American adults are unmarried, while singles account for 28% of all American households. According to Klinenberg, the increase of singledom represents the biggest demographic shift since the baby boom.
And that may be just as well. There are a lot better things you can be doing than obsessively searching for Mr. Right, Bolick explained. And Klinenberg, for his part, urged that this should be looked at as a social experiment, not a social problem.
