Carlos Santana grand slam boots Tigers who missed early chances for easy win

The Detroit Tigers failed too many times to put the Cleveland Indians away and paid the price when Carlos Santana delivered a game winning grand slam home run in the bottom of the ninth for a 9-5 Tribe win before 15,568 at Progressive Field. It was the third largest crowd at home for the Indians, who have had trouble at the gate this season despite being in first place of the American League Central Division.
The Indians, who trailed 3-0 and 5-2, tied the game in the seventh on a solo home run by Shelley Duncan and a 2-run blast by Asdrubal Cabrera off Tiger starter Max Scherzer, who gave up five runs on six hits with seven strike outs and five walks.
Prior to Cabrera coming to the plate as the tying run with two out and a runner on base in the seventh, Tiger manager Jim Leyland made a visit to the mound but allowed Scherzer to stay in and face Cabrera. That proved to be the turning point in Cleveland's 11th consecutive home win that also saw the Tribe get a solo home run from Matt LaPorta to start the seventh and bring the Indians to within two at 5-3.
