Fashion Fusion | Gladiator look is going strong

It may be time to rethink the words used to describe footwear. With each passing fashion season, the lines blur a little more between what has traditionally been defined as a “boot,” a “shoe” and a “sandal.”

Boots are getting skimpier, with peekaboo cutouts that reveal toes, ankles and/or calves. Meanwhile, sandals have become more substantial. Gladiator sandals enclose the heel, while straps crisscross and encase the foot. Some gladiator sandals boast cuffs that hug the ankle or even the upper calf, as seen at this fashion show in Brazil.

Another characteristic of gladiator sandals is their flat heels, a practical choice whether wielding a sword or shopping at the farmers market.

“Flat sandals are a warm weather essential,” says Gregg Andrews, fashion director for Nordstrom. “This season they are updated with intricate weaving, cutouts and embellishments,” such as buckles and studs, fringe and chains.

“To be on trend and comfortable, look for styles that cover the foot with gladiator straps or curvaceous cut work,” he says. And you have to love the versatility of a great sandal, which Andrews says will pair well with maxi dresses, cropped pants and boyfriend shorts.
