Mother's Day starts early at Pioneers Park birdwalk

For some, the ideal Mother's Day involves breakfast in bed, a
few roses and a trip to the spa.
But for the two dozen people wearing hiking boots and poring
over bird checklists at Pioneers Park on Sunday morning, brunches
and bouquets weren't cutting it.
Bret Leonhardt, 13, treated his mom, Kris Cherry, to the annual
Mother's Day Breakfast and Birdwalk at the park. Mother and son
struck out on the trail with their binoculars at 8 a.m. and spent
the next 90 minutes observing warblers and mallards.
Cherry said the fun was less in the avian experience -- she
spotted only a handful of the 42 species the walk leader pointed
out -- and more in spending time with her son on a cool spring
morning.
"I've seen only a fraction of these dang birds," she said. "But
it's just nice to be outside."
Nancy Vrbka's trip to the park was a Mother's Day present from
her husband, Greg. They were supposed to be joined by their teenage
children, but they decided to sleep late instead.
