Casio G'zOne Commando (Verizon Wireless)

The 3.6-inch, 480-by-800-pixel capacitive touch LCD is about average for the class. It's smaller than the 4.0 and 4.3-inch screens found on higher end, less rugged devices like the HTC Droid Incredible 2 ($149, 3.5 stars) and the Samsung Droid Charge ($299, 4 stars). I imagine that if they tried to build a tough enclosure around a 4.3-inch screen, the resulting device would be tremendous; given that, the 3.6-inch panel size is fine.
Unfortunately, the panel simply wasn't that responsive. Unlocking the screen was tough; each time, it took several seconds for it to register the motion, and sometimes it missed my finger swipe altogether. Four touch-enabled keys sit below the screen; the layout is a little cramped, but it's manageable. Casio replaced the on-screen QWERTY keyboards with ones that have a smaller number of larger keys; that's great if you're wearing mitts or typing on the thing in the pouring rain, but the sluggish response time was a disappointment; it could barely keep up with my typing.
