Purl Girls are among the many needlework groups in The Villages

THE VILLAGES — There is more than one way to knit a sock. Anita
Shapero and Dona Black can attest to that.
While chattering and knitting Thursday at Coconut Cove Recreation
Center, the two women noted the difference in how they have been
making socks.
Shapero, a Village of Winifred resident, has been using circular
needles to make her socks. Black, a Village of Sabal Chase resident
has been employing the magic loop method.
Shapero and Black are members of the Purl Girls, which has 36 women
on its roster.
“This is a social group,” organizer Virginia McLatchy said. “We
just get together as friends to sit and talk and knit and
crochet.”
Some of the Purl Girls also do needlepoint.
The Purl Girls are among the many recreation department-based
needlework organizations in The Villages.
In this community, you will find quilters, and machine sewing,
stitching (needlepoint, counted cross-stitch, embroidery and more)
and rug hooking groups mixed in with the knitting and crocheting
groups. Check the recreation schedule for a list the groups and
their meeting places.
