Time to lace up those hiking boots: The Montana Wilderness Association kicks off its annual Wilderness Walks program today at 7 p.m. at the Central Christian Church, 1025 Central Ave. in Great Falls.
This is the 49th year of the program in which members of the MWA volunteer to lead hikes into some of Montana's most outstanding landscapes. This year there are 145 events, including day hikes, backpacking adventures, field trips, midweek escapes and trail maintenance projects.
Tonight, hike leader Keith Gebo will provide a slide show and details on some popular hikes along the Rocky Mountain Front; hike leader Lisa Krebs will present "Tips for the Amateur Naturalist." Chris Leatham of Big Horn Wilderness will demonstrate the latest outdoor gear.
"I will be covering places to go — some of my favorites and some other perennial favorites for the hikes," said Gebo, the current president of MWA's Island Range Chapter. "The Rocky Mountain Front is my favorite area."
Gebo said he also will be discussing different types of safety situations and gear.
